Desert Dingo Racing

Baja 1000 is in full swing

Ok, that’s not technically true. I arranged for Paul “Pablo” Hartl (occasional DDR driver and full time Canadian rally car driver) to meet with my buddy Juan Carlos Aja because I wanted one of JCA’s T-shirts and Pablo had a lot of time on his hands.

JCA takes Pablo out for tequila and oysters. New team member Dennis Hollenbeck takes Paul out for fish tacos at Fenix. Fenix!

Fenix. I mean, come on.

Paul put his game face on this morning to go down and look at the Ensenada wash, which is what you hit about one minute after going off the start line. Off the dirt start line, sharp left threading through the crowd, then another hard left that, if you screw up, you end up clipping the curb by a small market. Then it’s power and lining up the car to hit the driveway just right and thread the needle between two telephone poles to drop down into the Ensenada wash. Here’s what it looked like this morning when Paul checked it out:

This will be like asphalt on Friday. I’m sure of it.

Back in 2007, when we first did the 1000 (our first race ever) I was co-driving and we dropped into the wash and I’d forgotten to put my face shield down. I will never forget the taste.
