Desert Dingo Racing

  • Over our heads….

I have heard rumblings that this Dirty Dingo Racing Team might be biting off more than they can chew…or “over our heads” as the saying goes.

    Perhaps…

My response to that idea is:

    OF COURSE WE ARE!!!!!

That is the point of this whole thing for me. We are Gearheads. Artists. Slackers. Free thinkers.

If something does not challenge me, I ask myself “why bother!”

I am fully prepared to go the distance or break down trying. If the racing gods so deem it so, I’ll hop out of the broken car, crack a Tecate and scarf a taco in the sun!

    Who is with me?

    skid

  • What are the odds?

Driving through Scotts Valley on Saturday I saw a red VW in a bank parking lot with a large No. 11 on it.

Roxanne was kind enough to allow me a quick detour and lo and behold, it was a Class 11 VW for sale – $1500.

Turns out the two guys who built it raced it once, loved racing so much that they’re moving up to another class. I’m talking to the team about it. Assuming it has decent compression and the transmission doesn’t grind, we’ll pick it up. I figure we can get a couple of desert races under our collective belts this year and take our time building our car for the Baja 1000.

    Updates as they occur.

  • Introducing the team – Mike Aquino

Still working on the website, but the team bios are starting to flow in. The Bug is in Skid’s garage, so I figure he deserves to go first.

    Mike “Skid” Aquino
    Co-founder, driver, wrencher, visionary, cat-herder

Skid is an experienced motorcycle rider/racer with many years experience in radical modification, chopping and bobbing of various modes of transportation. An artist and maker with a penchant for the dangerous and unusual. He’s raced everything from go-karts to flame-throwing golf carts and circular saws. He’s a consistent finalist (but never “winner” – rj) in the world famous Power Tool Drag Races, profiled on the Discovery Channel’s coverage of the 2004 event.

First approached about running a Class 11 racer in the SCORE Baja 1000 by rj via Instant Messenger, Skid was initially reluctant. At the urging of an over-stimulated ronjon, he put “Dust to Glory” on his Netflix queue. The rest, as they say, is history.

  • Silt – Nature’s way of saying "You’re not worthy"

We figure our greatest two concerns are going to be big rocks and silt. Big rocks we can probably drive around, considering all we have to do is average 25 mph to finish the Baja 1000 in 40 hours. Silt is what concerns us.

Sure we’ll have a tow rope, but that’s counting on someone being around the silt and in a mood to help us out.

I guess you just have to floor it and hope for the best.

  • This won’t be us

Another video clip, this one from the 2007 Baja 250. It was bad enough I was getting car sick just watching it, but the last 15 seconds put it over the top.
