    We are roadworthy

I swear I’m taking Romy to Men’s Wearhouse for a pair of fitted coveralls.

Bob, Romy and Crusty got 1107 road mobile today, with help from Dixon & Son Tires in Watsonville who swapped out a bunch of good tires off rims we trashed at the last race of 2011 at Prairie City (which, BTW, we won).

1107 goes back to Dixon & Son for an alignment on Wednesday. We deploy to Prairie City on Friday.

  • Buttoning up for Prairie City

    Buttoning up for Prairie City

What Dave Dougherty of Indefab does when I’m not on the phone to him asking about our skid plate.

Dave wrapped up some tweaks to our rear skid plate that should make it go on “like butter.”

Bob and Crusty will be at DDR HQ tomorrow to install the skid plate, get the seats and five point harnesses in and a bunch of other stuff in a crate in the shed. If everything goes as planned we should have 1107 driving around the neighborhood by EOD.

Less than two weeks to the first race of the VORRA season at Prairie City and we should have 4-5 Class 11s stinkin’ up the joint.

  • Race engine start

    Race engine start

Transmission and engine are in, courtesy of Crusty, Bob and Romy. Crusty welded the exhaust in place. Front fenders are even on. One more big workday and we’ll be ready for Prairie City. This is the first start of our No. 1 race engine since Bob and Romy rebuilt it over the off season. I won’t bore you with the five attempted restarts until we figured out the starter was tight.

    Some photos from this weekend…

  • Rallye Aïcha des Gazelles

    Rallye Aïcha des Gazelles

One of the coolest races in the world that happens each year is on right now.  Rallye Aïcha des Gazelles. It probably won’t get much coverage in the U.S., but there are two U.S. teams competing.

“Gazelles” is the only Rally Raid just for women. Since 1990, it has brought women from 33 countries to the Moroccan desert. Why anyone would do this is nuts. No GPS, no sat phones. 50 year old maps in French and Arabic. Compasses and sextants. If Wikipedia had a section on bad ass, this would be it.

This race deserves more visibility. The women who step up to race it deserve our support. Their sponsors deserve kudos. Team Lerner Reina are campaigning a bright orange purpose-built Jeep.

Team X elles is campaigning a Toyota FJ Cruiser that looks pretty awesome.

Leave it to the French to use a bunch of obscure browser plug ins and crappy web design. You can, however follow the race live daily here.

VORRA Prairie City 2012 Season Opener

VORRA just fired off the newsletter for our first 2012 race of the season at Prairie City. “This makes if official, I guess,” said someone in a position of authority.
