  • Engine rebuild begins

The VW Touaregs take first, second and third in the 2010 Dakar Rally.

Ok, the photo doesn’t have anything to do with us beyond that we both race VWs, but with this being the off season for off road racing in the U.S., I switched to watching the Dakar Rally in South America. Versus had great daily coverage, courtesy of Toby Moody and his production team, but Eurovision set the standard for all off road coverage with its daily coverage. Dakar organizers also set the standard for social media integration during the race. And VW had its iPhone app. Boston.com reprised their 2009 photo essay with a spectacular series of shots from this year’s event.

Bob reports that the engine will likely be close to finished with the rebuild by the end of the week or first part of next week. We run the engine pretty much non-stop at 6,000 RPM. When we rebuild it, I’m confident it will go to 6,011. The rain has kept us from getting much done, but once we get the transmission issue sorted out and the rear skid plate dialed, we’ll be ready to race.

With Dakar done, I’m following Marathon Rally and looking forward to Rallye Aicha des Gazelles in March. Nine days, no GPS, sat phones or support trucks. And you navigate with compasses and maps printed in the 1950s. I’m thinking, “Ok, where’s the fun part?” All that aside, the one U.S. team is Emily Sturges Miller and Wendy Fisher. Social media by Miss Motor Mouth, aka Michelle Naranjo. This is what it will be like:

  • Engine teardown

    Mike in mid-engine teardown.

Bob brought his ace engine guy Mike over today to help us tear apart the engine and decide how much of a rebuild we needed. Initially we planned to just change the rings, but on closer inspection we decided to do a complete teardown so we can start the season with an absolutely fresh engine.

Crusty focused on a redesign of our rear bumper, valence and skid plate, so that the whole back end mounts as a unit. Here’s a gallery of shots from today’s work day.

  • We switch to VORRA for the 2010 racing season

The team has decided to switch to the Valley Off Road Racing Association (VORRA) series for the 2010 race season and we’ll have our first race in April on the short course at the Prairie City SVRA just outside Rancho Cordova and just off Highway 50.

We loved racing the SNORE series (and finished third in class in the 2009 series), but the 1,000 mile round-trip drives to Vegas were taking their toll on the wallet. We’ll still be doing desert races in Yerrington, Fallon and Hawthorne, Nevada, but they’re quite a bit closer. VORRA Director Wes Harbor has been tremendously helpful in pulling this together and we expect to be joined by a handful of other Northern California Class 11 teams.

So here’s our full 2010 race schedule:

March 20-21 — Short Course — Prairie City, CA
April 24-25 — Short Course — Prairie City, CA
    May 28-31 — Desert Race – 300 Miles — Yerington, NV
    July 16-18 — Desert Night Race – 250 Miles — Fallon, NV
    September 4-6 — Desert Race – 225 Miles — Hawthorne, NV
October 9-10 — Short Course — Prairie City, CA
October 30-31 — Short Course – Halloween BBQ — Prairie City, CA
    November 17-21 — Baja 1000 — Ensenada, Mexico

We did a leak down test last week and the prognosis is “engine rebuild”, so we’ll be taking it apart this Sunday and making a run to Bugformance for the parts we need. Here’s a look at the Prairie City course:

  • And we make the DirtSports 2010 calendar

That’s us, the white one, behind red Bug, and the blue one.

We’re in fifth place off the line because we’re “drafting.”

  • The quiet before the storm

Shhhh. Daily recaps of the 2010 Dakar start today.

Update: Bob and his engine guy did a leak down test of the engine on Saturday. 20% down on two cylinders and 40% down on the other two. They’ll start stripping the engine down tomorrow and we should be back up to snuff in time for the first race of the 2010 season.

Bob brought his engine guy over to take a look at 1104 yesterday (it’s been a while since we did a tune up on it) and I’m waiting to hear the prognosis. I think I’ll get the sander out and sand off the rust on the light bar and get that painted.

We have some big things planned for 2010. An announcement within the next couple of weeks.

But first, vegging in front of the TV for the Dakar recap. Here’s a phenomenal photo set from the 2009 race.
