DESERT DINGO RACING OFFICIAL WORLD DIABETES DAY CAR  OF 46TH ANNUAL BAJA 1000 IN MEXICO

Premier off-road desert race coincides with World Diabetes Day on Nov. 14

October 18, 2013, Felton, Calif. — Desert Dingo Racing returns as the official World Diabetes Day race car at the 46th Annual Baja 1000 off road desert race. World Diabetes Day on Nov. 14 coincides with Baja 1000 Race Week in Ensenada, Mexico where the race starts and finishes.

“Team co-founder Mike “Skid” Aquino lived with Type 2 diabetes and the disease is reaching epidemic rates in the U.S. and Mexico,” said team co-founder Jim Graham. “It just made sense to use our race program raise awareness of the warning signs of diabetes and raise money for International Diabetes Federation’s (IDF) Life for a Child program.”

Desert Dingo Racing has a link for race fans to donate to Life for a Child on it’s website. 100% of money donated goes to the IDF program. The team is also strategizing with IDF on other ways to raise awareness during Race Week in Ensenada.

Baja 1000 Race Week runs from Nov. 14-17. Desert Dingo’s VW Beetle goes off the start line at approximately noon Pacific Time on Friday, Nov. 15 and has about 35 hours to finish the race. The Dingo’s will be race car No. 1107.

Desert Dingo Racing campaigns a 1969 VW Beetle in off road desert races in the United States and Mexico. The team has been working with IDF since the team’s first run at the Baja 1000 in 2007, has raised money for IDF programs, and had the car on display at the World Diabetes Congress in Montreal in 2009.

After three attempts at the Baja 1000 – one of the most challenging off road races that attracts teams from around the world – Desert Dingo Racing focused on racing in the U.S., winning the inaugural Xtreme Outlaws 250, a 24 hour endurance race and taking home Desert and Short Course season class champion trophies in the Valley Off Road Racing Association (VORRA) series.

The team receives support and sponsorship from Bayside Oil II, Bilstein, Dixon & Son Tires, Donaldson Company, Lifetime LED, MasterCraft Safety, MetalCraft, Maxtrax, Rare Parts, Inc., Rugged Radios and Wallentine Motorsports.

  • Rugged Radios comm install video

We’re back from VORRA’s USA 500 and kicking the dust out of everything. Rugged Radio‘s chief of marketing, Matt, sent me a link to the video he put together covering the install of the X5500 VHF radio, VHF wide-band antenna and the RRP660 intercom.

Music via MP3 player (my iPod Shuffle full of the hits of the ’50s, ’60s and ’70s) plus a jack for my iPhone, so I can call the Green Booger on the course at night when it’s lonely and I need someone to talk to. Or order pizza.

Greg and his son, who lives with Type 1 diabetes, do great work with the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. And we work with the International Diabetes Federation. We’re working to raise awareness of diabetes and support their outreach and education programs.

The comm worked flawlessly and 1107 can broadcast farther than it ever could before. This is a game changer for us.

  • Desert Dingo Racing featured in Gearbox Magazine

    Get a haircut, hippie

    Someone needs a haircut.

Gearbox Magazine editor Brian Driggs got it in his head that it might be interesting to do a piece on Desert Dingo Racing. We bounced emails back and forth and this is the result. I love my Stig shirt.

Desert Dingo: A True Story of “Dust to Glory”

For those who haven’t seen it yet, “Dust to Glory” is an epic movie about what it takes to run the Baja 1000 in Mexico. There probably isn’t a gearhead on the planet who hasn’t watched that flick and thought, “OMG. I wanna do that.” Jim Graham is one such gearhead, and OMG. He actually went out and did that.

  • What I’m thankful for this Thanksgiving

A much younger Dingo and Scott Anderson.

    Thanksgiving Day, November 25, 2010.

Thanks to everyone involved in VORRA, for tolerating us Class 11s, stinking up the joint.

To everyone involved in VORRA Class 11, for the food, snagging the good camping sites, and for Sharpies.

To Eric Solorzano, for taking my very first phone call.

To the International Diabetes Federation, for mistakenly thinking we were some big shot racing team.

Thanks to Joel Ward, for giving me advice in the parking lot of a Home Depot in Ensenada, which I took to heart.

To Paul Lukey at TrailGlow, for more than can be written in a single sentence.

To all of our sponsors, for having faith in us.

To Jason Mace for his electric kool aid acid test VW.

To Rob Messer, for being the most courteous driver in Class 11 history.

Thanks to Fidel, for giving us a forum to BS and exaggerate.

Thanks to every Class 11 driver, co-driver and team member I’ve had the pleasure of hanging out with over the years.

Thanks to the team – Desert Dingo happens because of you all.

And, lastly, thanks to Roxanne. Words cannot express…
