Motul providing technical support for Desert Dingo Racing

Desert Dingo Racing announced today that Motul, a global company specializing in high-tech synthetic lubricants formulated for powersports and automotive applications, is offering technical support for the team’s 2011 race season.

“We’re taking an air-cooled engine never designed to do what we put it through – high revs, high compression, high temperatures – and run it for hours on end at extreme altitudes in the high deserts of Nevada and Mexico,” said Desert Dingo Racing co-founder Jim Graham. “We’ve worked with Motul to identify a synthetic lubricant solution that allows us to operate at maximum efficiency, and they’ve done it.”

  • 1107 outside painting is done

People tarp Costco shelters in their front yard all the time
There’s nothing suspicious going on here. Seriously. Just keep driving.

Shawn and I decamped to a different part of the Santa Cruz mountains this past weekend to shoot the outside of 1107. Because we didn’t want to also spray every other car within a 300 foot radius, we grabbed every tarp we could find and zip-tied them to the shade structure that serves as our workshop.

That was Sunday. I checked out the car Monday night. The paint looked great and two days of 100 degree heat hardened it nicely. Over the next few days I’ll be using my extensive yoga training to sand and paint the interior. Then we put everything back in and truck 1107 to Rugged Radios in San Luis Obispo for a comm install. Then a photo shoot and then VORRA’s USA 500.

A couple of great announcements coming up. Photos from this past weekend’s work are here.

  • 1107 disassembly proceeds apace

it puts the oil on its accumulator

    Crusty admires our handiwork.

Crusty and I worked on 1107 2.0 on Saturday, mostly pulling perfectly good equipment out of it – seats, radio, comm, air filter, GPS, air pumper etc. to give Crusty the room he needs to finish some welding. Once he’s done, Shawn and I go in and do the final painting. Then it’s off to Rugged Radios for new comm installation. Then a photo shoot, then the USA 500 in mid-July.

More that that going on today with a probably early finish to watch the NASCAR Pocono race. While cleaning parts.

  • It’s finally starting to look like a race car

I don't care if it rains or freezes

If it weren’t for the last minute, nothing would get done.

One week til our first race of the season and 1107 2.0 is finally starting to look like a race car. Body is welded in place. Transmission is in. Air filter is in. Dash is in. Billy came by on Sunday and handled all the wiring. Shocks are in. Oil cooler fan is installed. Fuel cell is installed. The battery and case are in place. Pressurized oil sump is in. I dropped off the newly repainted steering column, side mirror nerf bars and the engine deck lid. I would have dropped off the trunk lid but for the life of me couldn’t figure out how to wedge it into a 2002 Golf. Yesterday I primed six fenders and assorted bits and bobs. Tonight I paint fenders and prime the wheels. I think the engine goes in today or tomorrow, too. We depart for Yerington around noon on Friday for the Yerington 300.

Here are some pretty boring photos of unpainted and painted car parts from this weekend
    .

On a serious note, we want to wish the best for the family of Paul Lukey (our sponsor with TrailGlow), who were caught in the tornado in Joplin. Everyone survived and we’re waiting for the result of Paul’s father’s surgery.
